Upcoming ESMO initiatives

22 February 2017

Dear National Representatives,

We'd like to bring to your attention the following initiatives, career development and learning opportunities that are currently available and open for application. We would really appreciate it, if you could help us promote these initiatives in your country and spread the information through your contacts.

  • ESMO Update for Practising Oncologists - new ESMO meeting (3-5 March 2017, Lisbon, Portugal)

This new meeting has been specifically designed to meet the educational needs of experienced oncologists who are active in clinical practice and treat a wide range of cancers, with the ultimate aim of improving practice at the point of care. A faculty of highly recognised speakers will present the current standard of care for 6 different tumour types, and case presentations will be followed by active discussion with participants. The interactive and informal format of the meeting will facilitate learning, dialogue and the exchange of best practice, bridging academic research and every day practice.

Late registration deadline: 15 February 2017 (reduced fees apply). Full registration from 16 February 2017.

  • ESMO Oncology Fellowship Programme

ESMO Fellowships are available for ESMO members (aged 40 or under at the time of application) and offer these young oncologists a unique chance to excel scientifically and gain valuable international experience. The programme promotes professional development, research, education and the science of medical oncology, enhancing the importance of networking for fellows and institutes and the role of mentors to supervise and guide young oncologists.

The 2017 Programme offers a wide range of short and long-term fellowships; detailed information, application requirements and deadlines are available here:

  • ESMO-ESO Course on Medical Oncology for Medical Students (13-18 July 2017, Valencia, Spain)

This annual five-day residential course is open to fourth and fifth year medical students and provides insight into all aspects of medical oncology, enabling students to get a full picture of this challenging, fast-evolving field before making the choice of their specialisation. 90 students will be selected on a competitive basis; successful applicants will be offered free registration, accommodation and travel grant.

Deadline for applications: 15 April 2017

  • 2017 ESMO Examination

The ESMO exam is a valuable tool for practising oncologists and medical oncologists in training to assess their knowledge. In Switzerland and Slovenia, the ESMO examination is the written part of the Board Certification in Medical Oncology; in all other countries, it certifies an excellent knowledge in the field of Medical Oncology, according to the ESMO criteria. Successful candidates are certified for five years.

The main session of the 2017 exam will be held on Saturday 9 September 2017 during the ESMO 2017 Congress in Madrid, Spain. Parallel sessions will be held in Egypt, India, Germany and Switzerland.

Please be informed that this year the ESMO Academy - which is specifically designed for professionals who intend to take the ESMO Examination - will take place in Oxford, UK on 4 - 6 August 2017 (registration will open March 2017).

We also count on you to help us further promote the ESMO/ASCO Recommendations for a Global Curriculum in Medical Oncology (2016 edition available on ESMO Open).

Please note that it is still possible for national societies to endorse the Curriculum and collaborate with ESMO on the translation and promotion/implementation at national level. Please know that the attached pdf file, which provides a recap of the major changes and new features that have been adopted in the new edition, has been already prepared for the purpose of popularisation.

Should your society be interested, please inform us at

Any questions or needs, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Thank you in advance for your help.

    Best wishes,
